GOPAL B.R., 1930-1998

B.R.Gopal or bAlakruSNa rAja gOpAl (ಬಾ.ರಾ.ಗೋಪಾಲ್) is a well known historian and epigraphist of Karnataka. He was born in Chikkaballapura now a district by itself. His early education took place in Kolar and Tumkur. He obtained a B.A. degree and an M.A. degree in History and Indology from the University of Mysore . He started his professional career as an epigraphist in 1955. After serving in the Epigraphist’s office, Govt. of India, Gopal joined the Karntak University in 1964. He started two elaborate projects in collaboration with Srinivasa Ritti. They involved writing comprehensive histories of Karnataka as well as ancient India . He moved on to the University of Mysore , in 1972, to head the project of revising the volumes of 'Epigraphia Carnatica'. He was successful in bringing out nine huge volumes within a short period. He joined the Krishndevaraya University at Ananthapur, Andhrapradesh as the Professor and the Head of the dept. of History after his retirement.

Dr Gopal was in the Chair, during the 15th Annual Congress of the Epigraphic Society of India held at Ananthapur. He was also honored with the Society’s ‘Copper Plate Charter’ in recognition of his services to Indian Epigraphy. ‘Sudarshana’ is the name of the commemorative volume broughtout in his honor in 1998. It is edited by Srinivasa Ritti, K.V. Ramesh and A.V.Narasimha Murthy. Some of his important publications are listed below. Dr Gopal himself was closely associated in an editorial capacity, in bringing out scholarly felicitation volumes honoring eminent scholars such as P.B. Desai, S. Srikantha Shastry, T.V. Mahalingam, M.Sheshadri etc.
